Introduction to Ag, Food and Nat Res - #AG 1201 Elective Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: None 2 Credit s 2 Semesters

 

Introduction to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (AFNR) will introduce students to leadership, plants, animals, natural resources, and more using hands on learning.  Students also develop a career portfolio as they investigate their personal interests and careers in agri-science.  While surveying the opportunities available in agriculture and natural resources, students will learn to solve problems, conduct research, analyze data, work in teams and take responsibility for their work.  All students will become members of the Clear Lake FFA. Students will also have a Supervised Agriculture Experience as the final project for the course.

Ag Leadership - #AG 1202 Elective Grades 11, 12

Prerequisite: Teacher approval 1 Credit 1 Semester

 

Ag Leadership will shape students into effective leaders through personal growth and development. In this course, students will each have an individual set of projects to work on throughout the duration of the semester. A requirement for this course is to participate in an FFA CDE or LDE contest during the spring semester. This course is built for students that are active members of the FFA chapter.  All students will become members of the Clear Lake FFA. Students will also have a Supervised Agriculture Experience as the final project for the course.

Agribusiness Management - #AG 1208 Elective Grades 11, 12

Prerequisite: Intro to Ag 1 Credit 1 Semester

Agribusiness Management introduces students to business management in agriculture. Throughout the course are practical and engaging activities, projects, and problems to develop and improve business and employability skills. Additionally, students investigate and develop viable business plans in order to solve local problems. Students also will learn about the ag markets and practice marketing strategies of grain crops.  All students will become members of the Clear Lake FFA. Students will also have a Supervised Agriculture Experience as the final project for the course.

Plant Science - #AG 1203 Elective Grades 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: None 1 Credit 1 Semester


Plant science is a course where students will learn how to apply scientific knowledge and skills to use plants effectively for agricultural and horticultural production. Students will discover the value of plant production and its impact on the individual, the local, and global economy. Students will be conducting experiments, running tests, and solving problems to help them better understand how plants work and their impact on our world.  All students will become members of the Clear Lake FFA. Students will also have a Supervised Agriculture Experience as the final project for the course.

Fall Horticulture- #AG 1212 Elective Grades 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Plant Science 1 Credit 1 Semester

 

Fall horticulture exposes students to the art and science of growing plants. In doing so, they cover a wide variety of topics, including principles of plant science, greenhouse and nursery operations, soils and growing media mixtures, fruit and vegetable production, interior and exterior plantscaping, irrigation systems, and hydroponics systems. Students will be involved in hands-on operation of the Clear Lake Ag greenhouse.  All students will become members of the Clear Lake FFA. Students will also have a Supervised Agriculture Experience as the final project for the course.

Spring Horticulture - #AG 1213 Elective Grades 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Plant Science 1 Credit 1 Semester

 

Spring horticulture exposes students to the art and science of growing plants. Students will be engaged in learning the basics of floral design, plant care and greenhouse management. Students will be putting in a lot of time in the greenhouse helping start seeds, transplant seedlings, and assist with the making of hanging baskets for the City of Clear Lake. Students will also be in charge of the annual spring plant sale in the greenhouse.  All students will become members of the Clear Lake FFA. Students will also have a Supervised Agriculture Experience as the final project for the course.

Animal Science - #AG 1204 Elective Grades 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Intro to Ag 1 Credit 1 Semester

 

Animal science is a course where students will study animal anatomy, physiology, behavior, nutrition, and health. Throughout the course, students will explore hands-on projects and activities. Topics covered in this course include animal rights vs animal welfare, animal housing, fetal pig dissection, basic genetics, and livestock judging.   All students will become members of the Clear Lake FFA. Students will also have a Supervised Agriculture Experience as the final project for the course.

Advanced Animal Science - #AG 1207 Elective Grades 11, 12

Prerequisite: Animal Science 1 Credit 1 Semester

 

Advanced animal science will drive deeper into animal reproduction, genetics, nutrition, and livestock judging. Students will explore hands-on projects and activities and learn more about the animal industry in North Iowa. There will also be multiple opportunities for students to dissect different specimens.  All students will become members of the Clear Lake FFA. Students will also have a Supervised Agriculture Experience as the final project for the course.

Ag Communications - #AG 1214_____ Elective Grades 10, 11,12

Prerequisite: Intro to Ag 1 Credit 1 Semester

 

Agricultural Communications introduces students to the fundamentals of communicating agricultural concepts through various media. Students will develop skills in writing, public speaking, photography, and digital content creation to effectively share agricultural stories. The course emphasizes real-world applications, including social media management, journalism, and advocacy for the agriculture industry. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to inform and engage diverse audiences about the importance of agriculture. All students will become members of the Clear Lake FFA. Students will also have a Supervised Agriculture Experience as the final project for the course.
